An oldie but a goodie

It was just a measly 6 years ago and we all thought we were on top of the world playin quake 3 with our Nvidia TNT 2 and voodoo 3000 video cards. With all the graphics on and gettin just above 30 frames a second on the latest and most impressive game engine a gamer couldnt have been any happier. But what about todays hardware vs the mighty quake 3 engine.
Test setup
My rig
Amd64 3200
2 gig OCZ Ram
ATI X800XL video card
1024X768
315 FPS
1600X1200
288 FPS
Dam if only todays games could run that well but will have
to wait another 6 years to see those numbers on Doom 3 and
Battlefield 2 possibly.

The great Battlefield 2 ram debate: 1 gig or 2?

Ever since Bf2 came out theres been alot of hoopla about hardware requirements specifically ram. The requirements shown on the box are 512MB ram. But my test is with 1024MB ram to see how fast maps load and the stability of the game actually running.
Test rig setup:
Abit AN8 socket 939 board
Amd 64 3200 cpu
1 gig stick OCZ PC3200 Value ram
Maxtor SATA 60 gig
Audigy 2 value sound card
Bf2 setup:
1280x1024 Resolution
All graphic settings on high
2x Anti-aliasing
100 % view distance
25 player games
ping between 40 and 60
My previous test was with 2 gigs of OCZ value ram.
Four maps, after a complete shutdown of my gamin
rig each took 1 min and 15 seconds to load. The gam-
e play was about ninety percent playable with very
few stuttering if any at all
Test with 1 gig of ram:
Four maps, after a complete shutdown and reboot of my gamin rig each took around 2 min and 20 seconds to load. The game play for the first 5 minutes was hideously choppy only to clear up a bit later on but still stutter slightly throughout the map. Upon leavin the game it took awhile for my desktop to get back in order with icons slowly forming back into place.
Once again these are my findings. Not all rigs
were created equal so a different out come is
possible for someone else.

Does dual channel mode make a difference in gaming?

I just purchased my second gig stick of OCZ value ram to
finaly complete my super system. I started it up. It dis-
played single channel for my ram. No big deal I thought.
Then I loaded up Battlefield 2 it took almost 3 minutes to
load a map. Ok it says it may take awhile cause it prepar-
es the video for the first time and all that.
After I played a few rounds of Battlefield 2 I decided to reco-
nfigure my ram to dual channel mode because it was lingeri-
ng around the back of my mind that my ram should be set up
correctly.
Loading up 4 different Bf2 maps with 25 players each time,
the load time went from 3 minutes down to 1 minutes and
16 seconds each time consistantly.
